I enjoyed the panel discussion on internet communications and a thought hit me between the eyes. Why couldn’t the LA Department of Education and LBP form a task force to get this information out to all of the schools in Louisiana? My concept would be to create a like forum with middle-school youth in the audience to ask questions which are pertinent to them. Tape the session and put it on a 30-40 minute CD which could be given to all middle schools in the state. The same could be done for high school youth. I am a member of the Bossier City Optimist Club and I am sure that we would be willing to financially support such a program if it would be a possibility. The reason for the 30-40 time length would be to add time following the listening to the CD to allow the students to comment. Let me know your feelings on such a venture.
MY DAUGHTER ATTENDS BARBE ELE. HERE IN CALCASIEU PARISH, SHES IN THE 4TH GRADE. SHE HAS DYSLEXIA, SHE PASSED HER REPORT CARD FOR THE YEAR, BUT FAILED THE L.E.A.P. TEST, ATTENDED SUMMER SCHOOL AND AGAIN FAILED THE STATE TEST. THIS IS VERY DISCOURAGEING FOR MY DAUGHTER. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LAWS DO YOU HAVE PROTECTING HER AND OTHER CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES, SUCH AS DYSLEXIA? WHEN WE MOVED HERE FROM TEXAS, THIS SCHOOL DOES NOT EVEN HAVE A DYSLEXIC TEACHER ON HAND TO HELP HER, WHERE AS TEXAS DID. I FEEL ITS NOT RIGHT TO HOLD HER BACK DUE TO HER DYSLEXIA. SHES ALREADY BEEN HELD BACK IN 2ND GRADE BEFORE SHE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH THIS. IF SHE GETS HELD BACK SHE WILL BE 20 WHEN SHE GRADUATES HIGH SCHOOL, AND THATS IF SHE DOESNT GET HELD BACK IN THE FUTURE. 20 YRS. OLD IN HIGH SCHOOL, WOW, I CANT HONESTLY SAY THAT I MYSELF WOULD FINISH, COULD YOU? IM WORRIED AND I NEED YOUR HELP. MY DAUGHTER TRIES, SHE TRIES SO HARD! PLEASE SOME-ONE CONTACT ME BACK AND HELP US. THIS CHILD IS OUR FURTURE, SHES BRIGHT, AND A HARD WORKING CHILD, BUT IF SHE KEEPS GETTING “KNOCKED DOWN” SO TO SPEAK I FEAR THAT IT MIGHT JUST COMPLETELY DISCOURAGE HER FROM HER EDUCATION. THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS, IF SOME-ONE COULD PLEASE EDUCATE ME ON THIS MATTER AND GUIDE US IT WOULD BE SO GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU.
I would like some information on community issues that New Orleans dealt with before hurricane Katrina. Would you have any information like homeless rate, drug and alcohol use ect.
UNITY of Greater New Orleans estimated in 2008 that N.O. homeless population doubled from 6,300, pre-Katrina, to 12,000. For more info, Google “Who is experiencing homelessness in Louisiana?” SOURCE: Appleseed, Continuing Storm: The Ongoing Struggles of Hurricane Katrina Evacuees. Also try Googling “The Second Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress, March 2008, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Office of Community Planning and Development”.
Try contacting UNITY in New Orleans. They may have more info.
